Calder Capital/SBDA Close 42 Deals – Smash Records Again!

With the successful sale of Gary Ulman Plumbing, Inc, of Tawas, Michigan on December 30, 2021, the Calder Capital/SBDA team completed transaction #42 for 2021, successfully smashing 2020’s records for closings and revenue. 

“Not only did we break our team closing record” noted Max Friar, Calder’s Managing Partner, “but we broke our quarterly record revenue in Q4 2021. I really have to hand it to the team. We had a number of rockstars step up to the plate this year, most notably, Garrett Monroe, who set closing and production records for Calder, Doug Yntema, who closed 15 franchise re-sale deals and set closing and production records for Small Business Deal Advisors, and Sam Scharich, who resurrected our buy-side practice, building a robust sourcing team and signing over 20 clients in 2021!”

Friar continued, “Revenue grew 66% versus 2020 and ended up 31% ahead of budget. Our recurring revenue grew 206% December year-over-year. Presently, we are managing 17 signed LOIs that have Q1 2022 closing target dates. We are heading into 2022 firing on all cylinders. The last time I felt this confident in a year was January 2020 and I suspect that another economy-halting pandemic is not around the corner this time!”

In terms of the types of transactions that are getting done by Calder/SBDA in 2021, service (33%), construction (21%), and manufacturing (17%) transactions lead the way with restaurant, distribution, and retail rounding out the industry list.

Overall, from an industry standpoint, the breakdown of deals has been as follows:

• Service – 33%
• Construction – 21%
• Manufacturing – 17%
• Restaurant – 14%
• Distribution – 12%
• Retail – 2%

24 transactions have been in Michigan and one each in the following states: Indiana, Ohio, Colorado, Illinois, Idaho, Texas, California, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, Alabama, and Tennessee. Among the buyers, 26 have been individuals, 11 have been strategic buyers, and 5 have been private equity/family offices.

Friar concluded, “I continue to feel that many owners are reaching the point of extreme burnout and I believe that buyers will have more choices heading into 2022. I expect persistent low interest rates to continue to help sellers, however, more businesses will go up for sale, evening out the market a bit.”
